How to Build a Mini Golf Course at Your Public Library

Picture
Recruit a great committee

Think about the jobs you'll need help with and who would best fit them. Some examples:

Hole building/decorating
Course logistics
Adult party
Volunteer recruitment
Promotion
Sponsorships

Create a Theme and Event Structure

Course theme ideas:
Community wonders (places and people)
Love Your Library
Summer Reading theme: Super Heroes, Fairy Tales
Community Wide Read theme
Holidays (Halloween is popular)

What is the purpose of your event? Is it a free event to encourage people to visit the library? Is it a fundraiser?
Will your event be for families only or will there be an adult party component?

Find Sponsors

Work with your committee to determine your budget for the event. Set a goal and create a sponsorship request letter that outlines various levels of support.

Sponsorships are important, comprising the largest percentage of income for this event. Your board members can help identify and ask potential sponsors.

Provide special opportunities for your highest level sponsors, such as including them in media interviews, shout outs at events, and cutting the ribbon to open your mini golf course.

Find Hole Builders and Decorators

Reach out to your community and ask local businesses and non-profits to build or decorate golf holes. Local woodworkers, construction companies and architecture firms really love this!  Click here for hole building and decorating guidelines.

Determine logistics for hole pick up or deliveries. One idea is to deliver the hole bases to the library a few days before the event and invite decorators to do their work on site. It's also a good idea to have a couple of additional practice holes available for small children who can't make it through the entire 18-hole course.

Recruit Volunteers

You'll need LOTS of volunteers for the course:

"Clubhouse" volunteers to check in golfers
Monitors to help control behavior on the course
Bartenders, table bussers if you have an adult party

Local student organizations and civic groups are often eager to help

Promote Like Crazy

Send a press release to your local media. Create a social media plan and promote the event on Facebook and other platforms. Use your network: ask hole builders and sponsors to cross promote the event. Reach out to local sports figures and writers and ask their help to share information on their social media pages.

And most important...
Have fun!!!
